Graduate Teacher Preparation Programs – Brooklyn, NY

Since 2003, Daemen University has offered Master of Science degree programs in Childhood Special Education and Early Childhood Special Education in partnership with Testing and Training International (TTI) to Orthodox Jewish women in Brooklyn, New York.

Building on this strong foundation, Daemen now offers both Alternative Certification (Transitional B) and Traditional Pathway options within its 36-credit master’s programs. Each program prepares candidates to become certified teachers in New York State while honoring the cultural and religious values of the Orthodox community.

Programs Offered

Students can apply to one of four program options:

  • M.S. – Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) / Students with Disabilities (All Grades PK–12): Alternative Certification
  • M.S. – Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) / Students with Disabilities (All Grades PK–12): Traditional
  • M.S. – Early Childhood Education / Students with Disabilities (Birth–Grade 2): Alternative Certification
  • M.S. – Early Childhood Education / Students with Disabilities (Birth–Grade 2): Traditional

All programs lead to eligibility for dual New York State teacher certification in general and special education.

Fieldwork Pathways

Students work closely with a Daemen advisor to select one of two fieldwork options based on location, employment, and certification goals.

Option 1: Alternative Certification (Transitional B)

  • Involves daily and monthly mentoring from an experienced certified teacher.
  • Designed for students who wish to earn while they learn through full-time classroom experience while completing their degree.

Option 2: Traditional Program

Available to all students, including those outside New York State, or for New York–based students who prefer a more flexible fieldwork structure.

  • Includes 150 hours of early field experiences (practicum) and 70 days of student teaching in approved school settings.
  • May be completed locally or outside New York State (if aligned with NY standards).
